Facebook has 200 million subscribers which despite it being the number one social networking site on the planet, means it still has a fair chunk of the human race to go.

OpenID Logo

So to make the task easier for people, Facebook has embraced the OpenID concept which means people that have other login details that are acceptable to other OpenID participants e.g. Yahoo, Microsoft, Google etc can now sign-up for a Facebook account using an existing OpenID login.

In a nutshell, this means that if you have an MSN Messenger email account, you can use now the login details you have for this account; to sign-up for a new Facebook account without having to create (and remember) a separate Username and Password.

Gmail Logo

Furthermore Facebook has taken the idea one step further by ensuring that people with GMail accounts, can similarly create a new account with Facebook using their existing sign-in credientials. something that other OpenID participants haven’t done as yet.

If you spend any time on web and actively participate in a number of social networking sites, then this move will help you. The ability for existing Facebook account holders (such as your’s truely) to login with their Gmail or OpenID details don’t seem to be there yet, so the benefits of a shared login for such folk can’t be enjoyed as yet.

But will be in time, no doubt.
